Neurofeedback has shown promising results in helping both adults and children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD). Research suggests that around 85% of individuals who have used neurofeedback training experienced a substantial reduction in symptoms. Remarkably, more than half of these individuals no longer met the symptomatic thresholds for these disorders12.
ADHD and ADD, characterised by symptoms such as impulsivity, hyperactivity, and distractibility, can significantly impact an individual’s quality of life. These conditions can lead to difficulties in organizing or planning activities, feelings of restlessness, and impulsive actions3. In adults, ADHD can disrupt social and work relationships and may be associated with depression, anxiety, and substance dependence4.
Traditional medical interventions for ADHD and ADD, like medication, have had mixed success and often come with side effects like insomnia and loss of appetite5. Moreover, these treatments often do not address associated issues like specific learning disabilities or academic skills disorders6.
Neurofeedback, on the other hand, has shown significant potential. Research indicates that post-neurofeedback training, attentive behaviors improve significantly, often at higher rates than those seen with medication7. Hyperactivity ceases, sleep problems improve, motor skills improve by 40%, and headaches disappear. There is also evidence of improved behavioural problems and academic performance8.
Therefore, while neurofeedback might not be a magic bullet, it certainly offers a promising alternative or adjunctive treatment for managing ADHD and ADD in both children and adults910.
